10 Ways to Dress Up an Interview Outfit

Because looking professional doesn't mean you have to sacrifice personality.

Getting a new job is pretty much always a nerve-wracking experience. Even with a solid resume, the interview is the moment when you really shine. But it's not just charming your prospective boss by rattling off the many reasons as to why you're the perfect candidate for the position — you also need to look the part. While it's always safe to err on the side of caution and opt for a classic black suit worn with pumps, why not take this moment to show a bit of personality? Think swapping a nude gloss for an equally as subtle but utterly sophisticated burgundy tint, or ditching the staid black blazer for a patterned jacket. Here are ten ways to make them remember you in the best way possible.

1. Try a Printed Suit Instead of Classic Black.

When it comes to Interview Advice 101, everyone usually says you should wear a black suit. But to better stand out, try a graphic windowpane check. It's equally as sophisticated, but way more stylish and shows you're fearless when it comes to adding a pattern into your look. To keep it from being too much, try it with a simple white blouse and sleek black pumps.

2. Swap in a Floral Blouse Instead of a White Button Up.

If you find wearing a head-to-toe print too overwhelming, try a sweet floral blouse in a dark hue. Since this version is slightly sheer, layer in a camisole for extra coverage. Then tuck it into a navy trouser and matching jacket. Finish with a menswear-inspired pump to play up the masculine-meets-feminine effect.

3. Look for a Sheath Dress With An Interesting Detail

Nothing is easier than wearing a LBD to an interview, but if you're looking for a job in a creative industry, your standby won't help you stand out. Instead, try one with a zipper detail; it's a youthful and unique contrast to the midi length. Finish with a tailored jacket and python heels to demonstrate your ability to mix interesting details in an ensemble.

4. Incorporate One Colorful Statement Piece

Looking for a gig as a designer, decorator or illustrator? You need to demonstrate your artistic flair. Neutral hues like navy, black, and gray will have you fading into the background – not standing out among the candidates. Instead, show your mastery of color proportion with a vivid full skirt in a shade of red or pink. Temper it with a cream silk tee and nude heels. The effect? Attention-grabbing in the best way possible.

5. Finish Off with Texture

Most people think your only option for shoes is a solid-colored, pointy toe pump. Not so! In the case of this silk shirt and skirt suit combo in black and white, a textured striped calf hair pump adds personality without detracting from the minimalist vibe.

6. Tote Your Personality

Adding a chic handbag is a great way to exude confidence during an interview. Try a structured cross body bag in leopard and cream. The animal print echoes the croc-printed heels while the tones of the leather play off the similar hues on the blouse.

7. Have a Sparkly Secret

If the job you're interviewing for has a strict dress code, it doesn't mean you have to play by the rules 100 percent. A striped blouse is one way to add individuality to a classic suit, but another subtle nod to your own personal style comes in the form of sparkly earrings that climb up the lobes and peek through your hair.

8. Channel a Chic European

When it comes to adding a touch of sexy into a professional outfit, look no further than stylish Italian women like Monica Belluci and Sophia Loren. They know how to entice without appearing vulgar. In this case it's a slim faux leather skirt with a leopard blouse tucked in. Undo the top two buttons to reveal a sliver of skin and finish withan elegant, long tasseled necklace.

9. Tie on a Scarf

Soothing hues of gray, blush, and nude offer the ideal backdrop for a statement-making scarf like this floral printed version. Tie it around your neck to add a pop of color and pattern to the ensemble. Or if you prefer, wrap it around the handle of your bag as an unusual accent that demonstrates your ability to think out of the box.

10. Perfect Your Pout

When it comes to makeup, less is always more. Think clean, groomed brows, sleek, blown out hair and a bit of blush on the cheeks. But skip the nude gloss! A rich burgundy shade that looks like your lips but better will light up your face and give your overall appearance added polish.

8 Foods that Benefit Your Brain

Everyone's been there: You're stuck at your desk over lunch hour, swamped with work, and you reach for the most convenient bite to eat. In two mindless minutes, you've choked down a Snickers, some pretzels, and a soda. But as you wave sayonara to the hunger pangs, you feel a mental crash coming on.

What you may think is an efficient snack may actually be doing you harm. Beyond being detrimental to your waistline, eating poorly can negatively affect your brainpower. To help you keep your mind in tiptop shape, Stephanie Clarke and Willow Jarosh, registered dietitians and co-owners of C&J Nutrition, have shared their top eight foods to benefit your brain.

1. Coffee
Thank god. According to Jarosh, drinking coffee in moderate amounts, like two cups per day, may improve your response time when preforming certain tasks and can also up your concentration. If you're more of a latte lover, fear not: Adding cow's milk or soy milk gives you a protein boost as well.

2. Walnuts
If you like to snack while you sip, add walnuts to your roster. Clarke deems them rich in healthy fats, including brain-boosting omega-3s. Eat them solo, sprinkle a tablespoon over hot or cold cereal, or mix them with other nuts to make trail mix.

3. Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are a perfect partner to walnuts — not to mention they're in season. Jarosh says they're an excellent source of zinc, a nutrient vital for enhancing memory and thinking skills. All benefits that pumpkin spice lattes, unfortunately, do not provide.

4. Salmon
Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B12, and Clarke stresses that omega-3s are important for brain function. Plus, they may reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

5. Whole Grains
Carbohydrates are not the enemy, according to Jarosh. They release glucose into the blood slowly instead of rapidly (like refined and processed grains), which helps keep you alert throughout the day instead of having ups and downs. Embrace the carbs, friends.

6. Dark Chocolate
Jarosh and Clarke say that chocolate contains flavanoids, which are antioxidants that can help increase blood flow to the brain. Yes, you can celebrate. Opt for dark chocolate with at least 65 percent cacao to get the most benefits.

7. Avocado
This superfood is rich in monounsaturated fat, which helps improve blood flow to your brain, says Clarke. Add avocado to smoothies, salads, sandwiches, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

8. Water
Both Jarosh and Clarke stress that dehydration affects your ability to think clearly and concentrate. The fact is simple: Every system in your body functions best when hydrated. Stay hydrated at work by keeping a reusable bottle of water on your desk at all times.

Bonus Breakfast Recipe: Blueberry Pumpkin Quinoa
Heat 1 cup cooked quinoa with ½ cup milk with until warm. Stir in cinnamon and vanilla extract to taste. Top with 1 cup blueberries and 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds. Add 1 teaspoon brown sugar or maple syrup to sweeten, if desired. Kick the day's ass!
